Loyalkaspar Hits The ‘’Tattoo Highway’’ For A&E

Posted by cgnews On June - 30 - 2009

For A&E Network’s “Tattoo Highway,” a new reality series, Loyalkaspar used hand-drawn illustrations to create the tattoo art seen in the image spot; while for the MTV “Spring Break ‘09” package they referenced an analog photographic technique known as “Lomography.”

“Tattoo Highway” takes tattoo reality television on a road trip with master tattoo artist Thomas Pendelton. Pendelton and his business partner and wife Monica have transformed a 1970s tour bus into a tattoo parlour on wheels, featuring a swanky interior and top-of-the-line tattooing equipment. It’s a tattoo shop that can tattoo anyone, anywhere.

For the image spot, Herbruck and Baudenbacher traveled to picturesque Lancaster, CA to film Pendelton, using the state-of-the-art digital RED camera system, standing in the middle of a desert road and talking directly to the camera about his life as a tattoo artist and his motivation for taking his work on the road. Swirling around him as he talks are a series of highly-detailed tattoo art that was first hand-drawn on paper and later scanned and animated using Flash.

“The goal for this project was to introduce the show and Pendelton to viewers,” Baudenbacher says. “We wanted to capture his intense personality and get a sense of who he is and how passionate he is about tattoos and their meaning to people. For the tattoo art, it was crucial that we use illustration to capture all of the subtle imperfections that make them so powerful. Digital is too perfect to create realistic-looking tattoo art.”

This recent project for A&E Network effectively highlights both the diverse creative skills and love of blending organic and digital art found at Loyalkaspar, the creative design/production company led by directors David Herbruck and Beat Baudenbacher, part of the transmedia branding and design group LORI PATE+.

Low Tech Look Rings True For MTV’s Spring Break ‘09

Posted by cgnews On June - 30 - 2009

For the show package to its “Spring Break ’09” coverage, MTV’s annual paean to bikini-clad fun, Loyalkaspar referenced a decidedly retro photographic technique known as “Lomography,” which takes its name from the LOMO, a compact 35mm camera popular in the 1980s, known for producing oversaturated colors, off-kilter exposures, blurring and other whimsical photographic images.

Low Tech Look Rings True For MTV’s Spring Break ‘09 mtv girl

“It’s a short, but definitely effective piece,” says Elliott Chaffer, Creative Director at Loyalkaspar. “We wanted to give the look a personal touch, almost like a quick documentation of the spring break experience.”

Set to a driving electronic beat, the screen is separated into four vertical blocks, each displaying a closely related, yet slightly different series of images (featuring shots from noted fashion photographer Neil Stewart), all backed by a brilliant blue sky. One series of stills shows a blonde beauty in reflecting sunglasses tilting her head back toward the sun.

Another shows a young man grinning happily while overlooking the ocean. In the last one, a woman and a smiling couple all glow with anticipation, which quickly gives way to a rowdy beach crowd waving their arms in the air. At center screen, and bridging the four vertical blocks, is the MTV “Spring Break ‘09” logo.

“In assembling the imagery in four parts, we actually removed some frames to give the scenes a jerkier look,” Daniel Dörnemann, Loyalkaspar’s Art Director/Designer, explains. “The low-tech feel accentuating these beautiful color burns gives the entire piece a vibrant, fashionable party look.”
While everyone liked the idea of the handmade, four-part look, selecting the appropriate imagery was another story.

“We provided a number of possibilities to MTV, and to their credit they went for the most stylized concept,” he says. “Selecting just the right images to open the spot took a good deal of collaboration. In the end, everyone was pleased with how it turned out.”

Dr. Dre Helps Cut+Run Deliver Dr. Pepper Commercial

The new commercial for Dr. Pepper via agency Deutsch and edited by Cut+Run’s David Checel features Hip-Hop mogul Dr. Dre and the world debut of a track from his highly-anticipated “Detox” album. Directed by Paul Hunter, the commercial extols the benefits of savoring the 23 flavors of Dr. Pepper slowly to appreciate its true value. The commercial begins with Dr. Dre walking into a very chic but dull party.

He makes his way over to the DJ booth, where a quirky guy on the turntables is playing a techno beat that isn’t pleasing the crowd or the Doc. To get the party started, he places a can of Dr. Pepper on the vinyl which slows the track to reveal one of his own. The crowd responds with undulating appreciation. “Slow is better,” he advises. “Trust me, I’m a doctor.”

Smoke & Mirrors NY Puts Dinosaurs On Ice

Posted by cgnews On June - 19 - 2009

Smoke & Mirrors New York (SMNY) teamed with Carmichael Lynch Minneapolis this past winter to launch a beautifully quirky spot for the Denver Museum of Nature & Science that showcases the New York studio’s ability to complete a project from production through post.

Smoke & Mirrors NY Puts Dinosaurs On Ice denver falling

The “silent movie” like spot features the improbable, but amusing scenario of a giant dinosaur playfully slipping and sliding across a frozen pond. A stirring classical number runs in the background as the brontosaurus crashes, struggles, pirouettes, and ultimately topples back to the ice. The spot ends with a superimposed graphic: “Dinosaurs. Ancient Fossils. New Discoveries. Coming this winter to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.”

Carmichael Lynch’s Executive Integrated Producer Brynn Hausmann comments, “It was an incredible experience at Smoke & Mirrors, the process could not have been more seamless. We had lots of fun and a very satisfying creative experience.”

Via our recently ramped up 3D department we were able to create, rig, animate and render the entire project in under a month. Smoke & Mirrors filmed the live-action backgrounds in Central Park, then the Manhattan skyline was replaced with the Denver Museum area in post.

Every detail from the ice cracking under the reptile’s tremendous weight, to ice chips flying from its slipping feet were rendered to create a believable, cohesive scene.

This sees a move into animation direction for Smoke & Mirrors, a new service we are pleased to offer.

“Monkey Island” Introduces Monkeyhead 2009 Showreel

Posted by cgnews On June - 19 - 2009

Innovative motion design and production company Monkeyhead is very proud to present “Monkey Island,” an original animated short created specifically to introduce the company’s Summer 2009 Reel. In the humorous original “Monkey Island” short, which was created entirely in-house at Monkeyhead under the guidance of founder and creative director Josh Sahley, a fire-dancing tribal monkey tries to impress his elders by lighting a beach fire. Music and sound design for the project are courtesy of Eric Stolz of LA-based Oddio.

Monkey Island Introduces Monkeyhead 2009 Showreel monkeyhead group

“Normally we just put a montage together showing the work we’ve done and that’s it,” Sahley began. “This year, we took some time to come up with a story and bookend our reel with a hilarious little character animation that really shows another side to us.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of animated movies and cartoons,” Sahley continued, “and once we dove into producing ‘Monkey Island,’ we went back into the vaults and studied all the classics, really following their timing, expressions, storylines, etc. Overall, our biggest challenge was telling our strange little story without any words. Since the monkey’s all wear masks, we had to rely heavily on body language and the lead monkey’s eyes. You learn to appreciate two of my favorite characters, Wile E. Coyote from Looney Tunes and Scrat from ‘Ice Age,’ even more after working on something like this.”

Monkeyhead’s Summer 2009 Reel features highlights from an impressive, growing catalog of innovative motion design and production work for major entertainment brands, including key art and main titles for the Red Bull Big Tune live events, webisodic series and TV special, feature and TV main titles for Tanner Hall’s “The Massive” documentary project, visual effects and animation work for the feature film “Echelon Conspiracy,” on-air contributions for Disney Channel, MTV, MTV2, VH1 and Versus.

The debut of “Monkey Island” and Monkeyhead’s Summer 2009 reel comes at a key time in the three-year-old company’s growing success story. “Monkey Island” was several months in the making, and its production benefitted from new investments into additional 8-core Mac Pro workstations. Among his other standard tools, Sahley favors Adobe After Effects and Cinema4D, and his unique approach of commissioning specific artistic teams for individual project assignments is helping to expand the company’s arsenal, its style, and its reputation.

Most recently, Sahley signed a nationwide representation agreement with The Ashy Agency. “As soon as I started searching for representation, I was introduced to Brett Ashy, and signed with him immediately. We both see eye-to-eye on our business approach and are completely dedicated to our clients. It seems to be a perfect fit.”

Continuing, Sahley added, “Even in the current down market, I’m happy to report that business is really growing. With our name getting out there and new opportunities shaping up every day, it’s really an exciting time for us.”

Monkeyhead have also created commercial spots for the U.S. Army, Bank of America, the Audobon Insectarium, Earthlink, Epson, Ghirardelli, and a series of video installations for Westin Hotels and Resorts.

Since moving to a larger studio in Culver City in 2008, under Sahley’s creative direction and through his management approach pairing specific artistic teams for individual assignments, Monkeyhead continues to evolve its style in delivering groundbreaking commercial spots, broadcast show packages, branded entertainment, movie/TV titles and visual effects sequences.

DUCK Produces Video For Country Superstar Keith Urban

Posted by cgnews On June - 18 - 2009

Renowned music video director Chris Hicky teamed up with DUCK’s animation director Richard Borge for his stylistic animation techniques for the latest video for country superstar Keith Urban. Kiss A Girl, the second release off of the Australian singer’s fifth studio album, Defying Gravity, is the rollicking, upbeat story of two young lovers told through Urban’s trademark catchy lyrics and shown onscreen with a dazzling combination of live-action footage, photo stills, and animation brought to life by a close collaboration between Borge and Hicky.

DUCK Produces Video For Country Superstar Keith Urban urban bench

Hicky tapped into Borge’s style and technique with DUCK’s ever-growing resource pool to lead a large crew of animators, VFX artists, and editors to assemble the multimedia music video. After a bike-riding hipster accidentally runs into a beret-wearing girl at an art museum, they exchange numbers and a romance unfolds through a series of treated live-action footage and stills, in which the new couple texts and enjoys intimate interludes on a park bench and Ferris wheel. The photo real cutaways of the couple”s love story were filmed as photo stills and then brought into After Effects to apply and design a unique treatment.

As the narrative cuts back and forth between the young lovers and Urban’s band rocking onstage in Nashville, animation enhances the narrative, with stick-figure birds fluttering across the cityscape and transforming into hearts, animated power lines, and a fantastic amusement park complete with roller coasters and a tent-filled midway. Borge co-directed and designed the animation and abstract urban treatment applied to the live-action performance footage.

“A project like this is deceptively complicated,” noted Hicky. “What seems like a straightforward stage shot and narrative is actually a multilayered project when the treatment is applied to strike the exact tone that a celebrated artist like Keith Urban expects. DUCK did an awesome job of taking the various types of footage, mixing in the treatment and the FX, and putting together a pitch-perfect final project.”

“DUCK is growing all the time, and this video is a great showcase of our latest capabilities,” stated Mark Medernach, DUCK EP. “When you’re working with a known director like Chris Hicky, you don’t want to disappoint, and I’m really proud of our team for coming through on this one, especially given the high-profile nature of the final product.”

The video’s intro features original art direction and design by DUCK’s directing team YellowShed (Todd Hemker and Soyeon Kim).

Assassin’s Creed II – Trailer & E3 Expo Interview

Posted by cgnews On June - 17 - 2009

Truth is written in blood – I will seek vengeance upon those who have betrayed my family, and uncover a conspiracy bigger than I could have imagined. I am Ezio Auditore Di Firenze. I am an Assassin.

Assassins Creed II Trailer & E3 Expo Interview ac assassin

The Italian Renaissance is the ideal historical era and location for Assassin’s Creed II – the long-awaited sequel to one of Ubisoft’s most successful games, Assassin’s Creed. Assassin’s Creed II (or Assassin’s Creed 2) is a sandbox-style action-adventure video game being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, set to be released worldwide in November 2009 on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

The story of the game follows Ezio Auditore Di Firenze, a young man of noble birth, who is set on a path of revenge after his family is brutally betrayed. Assassin’s Creed II is an epic story of vengeance and conspiracy set in the pristine, yet cruel, backdrop of 15th Century Italy.

The game commences during the Carnival of Venice in the year 1476, being set 285 years after the story of Assassin’s Creed. As with Assassin’s Creed, historical figures are present amongst the cast of characters and players will meet the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli as they progress through the game.

The story follows Ezio after his family’s betrayal, hiding out in the myriad canals of Venice, where he learns the arts of the master assassin. He meets and befriends Da Vinci who provides a host of weapons to aide Ezio in taking on Florence’s most powerful families.

Assassins Creed II Trailer & E3 Expo Interview ac prostitutes

At a point during the game Ezio will even be able to access Leonardo Da Vinci’s legendary flying machine, which he can use to drift through the air as if on a glider. Players are able use heat from fires to give the flying machine some lift, allowing Ezio to move swiftly around the canals knocking guards into the water.

Players can utilize water and an array of scenery as cover, and can now blend in with any crowd rather than just the one group of scholars dressed in white, as was the case in Assassin’s Creed.

Assassins Creed II Trailer & E3 Expo Interview ac soldiers

Like the main character in Assassin’s Creed Altaïr, Ezio is an ancestor of Desmond Miles, the bartender captured by modern day Knight Templars ‘Abstergo Labs’; with Ezio himself being a descendant of Altaïr. He will wield dual hidden blades, although at least one of the blades will convert into a concealed firearm upon activation.

Additional famous Italian landmarks and locations rumoured to be making an appearance in Ezio’s journey include Rome, Florence, the Tuscan countryside, St Mark’s Basilica and the Rialto Bridge.

Interview with Assassin’s Creed II Creative Director, Patrice Desilets; and Executive Producer Jade Raymond at E3 Expo 2009. E3 Expo is the world’s premiere trade show for computer and video games and related products and was held 2 – 4 June 2009.

Cut+Run Move to Samsung’s DJ Beat

Posted by cgnews On June - 16 - 2009

The new campaign for Samsung’s Beat DJ is a wacky and wonderful illustration of the phone’s totally unique offerings. Beat DJ places the user’s digits in control of their music with the ability to add a whole wealth of DJ effects with a tap of the touch screen. In these just-launched spots, a giant finger literally inserts itself into the music making process, as it becomes a new addition to Blacintosh and Chester French, who find the addition simultaneously confusing and compelling to great effect.

Cut+Run Move to Samsungs DJ Beat samsung pedal1

Director Paul Hunter tapped the editorial talents of David Checel from Cut+Run for the project via UK agency Beattie McGuinness Bungay. The duo previously collaborated on an Orbit “Droppin’ 35″ viral video and Dr. Pepper/Dr. Dre.

“From the live action shoot featuring a man in a finger costume, to the complex edit needed to synch the CG finger’s action with each music track, this project was infectious and bizarre in the best possible way,” says Editor Checel. “Paul and I worked together to find moments that strike a balance between the band being annoyed and enjoying the finger’s antics. From an editor’s standpoint, it doesn’t get better than that.”
