Push Trailer & New Exclusive Film Clip

Posted by admin On January - 29 - 2009

A riveting action-thriller, Push burrows deep into the deadly world of psychic espionage where artificially enhanced paranormal operatives have the ability to move objects with their minds, see the future, create new realities and kill without ever touching their victims. Against this setting, a young man and a teenage girl take on a clandestine agency in a race against time that will determine the future of civilization.

The Division, a shadowy government agency, is genetically transforming citizens into an army of psychic warriors – and brutally disposing of those unwilling to participate. Nick Gant (Chris Evans), a second generation telekinetic or ‘mover’, has been in hiding since the Division murdered his father more than a decade earlier. He has found sanctuary in densely populated Hong Kong – the last safe place on earth for fugitive psychics like him – but only if he can keep his gift a secret.

Nick is forced out of hiding when Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning), a 13 year old clairvoyant or ‘watcher’, seeks his help in finding Kira, (Camilla Belle) an escaped ‘pusher’ who may hold the key to ending the Division program. Pushers possess the most dangerous of all psychic powers: the ability to influence others’s actions by implanting thoughts in their minds. But Cassie presence soon attracts the attention of the Division human bloodhounds, forcing Nick and Cassie to flee for their lives.

With the help of a team of rogue psychics, the unlikely duo traverses the seedy underbelly of the city, trying to stay one step ahead of the authorities as they search for Kira. But they find themselves square in the crosshairs of Division Agent Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou), a pusher who will stop at nothing to keep them from achieving their goal.

Those with these abilities are divided into several categories:

Movers can manipulate inanimate objects at varying distances. The actual technique is known as kinetic signature control, where the mover is trained to “hear” and identify the specific atomic frequency of any given material, and alter the gravity wave around it, usually producing the nearby air to appear “warped”. Advanced movers can work at the molecular level creating protective shields in the air around them.

Pushers can “push” specific thoughts, memories, and even emotions into their targets. This technique can be used to gain a subject’s trust, or to have them perform any action, thinking it was their own agenda.

Watchers are trained to self-induce visions of the future, very much like a prolonged sense of deja vu. The technique of following the future, either of a person or object, is called subject tracking. A Watcher’s skill is primarily rated by how far they can see into the future.
Bleeders have the ability to emit high-pitched sonic vibrations that cause ruptures in a target’s blood vessels.

Sniffs are highly developed clairvoyants who can track the location of either people or objects over varying distances. Like psychic bloodhounds, their tracking ability is increased if they have tactile access to an object that has been in direct contact with the subject. Sniffs receive information based on images, not specific addresses, which is why identifiable landmarks help increase their effectiveness.

Shifters can temporarily shift patterns of light on any object to create illusions to the naked eye. They work mostly on a touch basis, but once the illusion is established, it remains with the object for short periods of time. For example, a Shifter could momentarily touch a one dollar bill, altering its light pattern to appear as a one hundred dollar bill for hours, until the effect expires. The length of the shift is based on experience and ability.

Wipers are skilled at either temporary or permanent memory erasure, an invaluable asset in espionage. Experience will dictate the accuracy of their wipes, though the danger is always present that they will eliminate a desired memory.

Shadows are trained to block the vision of other clairvoyants such as Sniffs, making any subject within their target radius appear “dark”. Experience will enhance the size of the area they can shadow and the intensity of their shielding effect. Shadows need to be awake to perform their ability, and it is common for a detail of two Shadows to operate in shifts while protecting a person or object for extended periods.

Stitchers are psychic surgeons trained to quickly reconstruct cells to their previous or healthy state. Using only their hands, they can heal and even “unheal” whatever they have done. For more detailed work, Stitches use a silver based cream on their hands which acts as a conductor to their ability.

VES Awards Nominee ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’

Posted by admin On January - 28 - 2009

CGNews takes a closer look at VES Awards nominee ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. Each year the VES Awards recognize outstanding visual effects within film, animation, television, commercials and video games. The nominees for the 7th annual VES Awards were chosen earlier this month by panels of VES members who viewed submissions at the FotoKem screening facilities in Burbank.

Over the next two weeks CGNews will feature each film nominated within the ‘Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture’ category. The films nominated in this category are: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Chronicles of Narnia – Prince Caspian, Hellboy II – The Golden Army, Cloverfield and Iron Man.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
‘I was born under unusual circumstances’ …… And so begins ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, adapted from the 1920 story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards. A man, like any of us, unable to stop time.

The film begins in 2005: an elderly lady on her deathbed tells her daughter the story of a blind clockmaker named Gateau, who was once commissioned to make a majestic clock for the main train station in the city of New Orleans.

Whilst working on the clock, Gateau received the terrible news that his son had died fighting in World War I. In a desperate hope that the clock could help bring back those who had died in the war, Gateau continued work on his clock, and intentionally designed it to run backward.

‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, takes the viewer from moments at the end of World War I in 1918 and on into the 21st century; and follows the life journey of Benjamin Button that is as unusual as any man life can be’s.

Directed by David Fincher, ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, is a ‘time traveller tale of the people and places he bumps into along the way, the loves he loses and finds, the joys of life and his sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.’

The film required extensive post production work to create the visual effects for the metamorphosis of the character of Benjamin Button from old man to infant. The director used a camera system called Contour developed by Steve Perlman to capture facial deformation data from live action performances.

‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ has also been nominated for 13 Oscars and 11 Baftas in 2009.

SMNY and TAXI Insure Life In NY

Posted by admin On January - 28 - 2009

Smoke & Mirrors New York presents NY Life for TAXI. The campaign follows three diverse life cycles that portray how giving the selfless gift of life insurance ensures that loved ones are always taken care of.

In ‘Couple’ we are shifted from live action to stills as a man and woman capture the defining moments of their relationship.

‘Daddy’ moves us through the years of an evolving relationship between a father and son. As the father’s hair turns grey and the son catapults through his young life the value of insurance increases as well.

‘Kids’ acknowledges the decreasing intervals of memorable “firsts” in the lives of our children. As we move past an NY Life present wrapped and tied with a bow, we are reminded of the one first that should matter the most-life insurance.

Lead Flame artist Nic Seresin undertook the re-timing and smoothing of the camera move in ‘Couple’, and then seamlessly composited live action stills into empty photo frames. Wei Louie and Greg Calas from SMNY’s 3D department then fabricated and tracked in presents to the live action to complete the illusion.

The Mill Help Norwich Union Change to AVIVA

Posted by admin On January - 23 - 2009

The Mill has collaborated with AMV BBDO and Serious Pictures to produce two new starry spots for the AVIVA rebrand. Entitled ‘Name Change’ the commercials celebrate the change in name of Norwich Union to AVIVA using a host of A-list celebrities. Directed by Vaughan Arnell the tongue and cheek commercials include appearances from a top Hollywood star, a comic, musicians and a famous model.

‘Name Change’ – Bruce’s, begins with a scene which catapults the viewer into a Die Hard shot only to find a Bruce Willis of old and new sitting beside each other in an action packed car sequence. The Bruce Willis of new asks the camera ‘Would Walter Willis have got to play the leading man?’ This spot also features appearances from Elle Macpherson, Alice Cooper and Ringo Starr.

The second of the two spots, ‘Name Change’ – Ringo’s begins with black and white footage from – Beatles-mania. Using the same background footage as before it cuts to a shot of the current Ringo Starr asking ‘Would any of this have happened to me if I’sd have still been Richard Starkey?’ Other stars featuring in this spot are rock star Alice Cooper, Dame Edna doing stand up and Bruce Willis.

Lead Flame, Barnes, said: ‘Our work on AVIVA was divided into two totally separate films. Both projects were generally shot, edited and posted together. We were all keen to allow each of the five vignettes to have a different look and feel. The most interesting era to recreate was the Alice Cooper early 70s tube-camera. The production company managed to track down an old 30+ year old studio camera which gave the image that blown out, electronic studio feel. Once the old footage was sourced and transferred the modern day stars were composited into each scenario.’

Barnes added: ‘In ‘sI am John’s each character finds themselves in one scenario, with their alter-ego delivering a line to camera. Each split screen shot features a moving camera usually tracking into position. This was carefully choreographed on set to provide consistency and then tracked together at The Mill in flame. In between many of the scenarios are short time-lapse sequences which add pace and visual interest. These were all shot alongside the main production on a Digital SLR stills camera. This allowed the director to concentrate on the principle filming while a very small – second-unit – of one – shot extra material in and around the set.’

Diesel and Walker – ‘Fast & Furious’ Once More

Posted by admin On January - 22 - 2009

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker regroup for the ultimate chapter of the film franchise built on speed ‘Fast & Furious’. This is the fourth movie to be produced in the series but it is a sequel to the first and second, and a prequel to the third ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’.

The plot connects with the original film allowing Diesel and Walker to reprise their roles alongside Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. This is the first time the four actors have been reunited on set since ‘The Fast and The Furious’. Only Paul Walker appeared in the second film of the series and Vin Diesel made a brief solitary cameo in the ending of the third.

‘Fast & Furious’ is a high-octane action-thriller that sees the Diesel, Walker et al “blast muscle, tuner and exotic cars across Los Angeles and floor through the Mexican desert”.

The storyline begins with fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto returning to LA where he reignites his old feud with agent Brian O’sConner. But as they are forced to confront a shared enemy, Dom and Brian must give in to an uncertain new trust if they hope to out-maneuvere him.

“From convoy heists to precision tunnel crawls across international lines, two men will find the best way to get revenge: push the limits of what possible behind the wheel.” Universal Pictures.

An Empire online review urges viewers to file the film under ‘guilty pleasure’ stating that “petrol-heads are in for another dose of shamelessly dumb fun”.

Both the teaser and the new trailer for the film can be viewed at the Fast & Furious website.

“The giggles of stupid glee should be reserved for the end, however, where Toretto speeds his car underneath a bouncing, flaming tanker. If this were an Xbox game then that would surely be an Achievement Unlocked moment.” Empire online 15 January 2009.

Fast & Furious is due for release early April 2009.
