Click 3X Produce Unique Film Titles

Posted by cgnews On December - 31 - 2008

New York-based design and VFX studio Click 3X recently produced title sequences for two feature films from Academy Award-winning directors, Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married, and Davis Guggenheim’s It Might Get Loud. Both projects involved heavy stylistic experimentation and hands-on collaboration with the directors to develop sequences that embody and introduce the subject, complement the film openings, and add to the overall storylines. The projects demonstrate the range of scope and design depth of the Click 3X team, who continue to release visual solutions for commercials, films, television, music videos, and integrated media.

Rachel Getting Married, released in late 2008, was shot documentary-style to convey the tension and uncomfortable nature of complex interpersonal relationships, heightened by the abnormal interactions that only a wedding weekend can provide. Both the film and Anne Hathaway’s role have received great critical acclaim. For the project, Click collaborated once again with director Jonathan Demme, expanding on the working relationship first established with Demme’s unconventional feature documentary on Jimmy Carter titled, Man From Plains. In developing the titles, the design team carefully infused Demme’s directorial vision to capture and subtly convey the palpable friction of a flawed family, as well unveiling the raw feelings and conflict that weddings can incite.

Creative Director Steve Tozzi adds, “Using the input from Jonathan and some really elaborate and unique styling, we tried to integrate emotive hints at the plot into every detail of the titling. Each aspect of the opening sequence, from the typography and screen placement, to the range to type sequences and titles and names all echo the mood of the film. Even the placement of text on the screen reiterates the disorganization and awkwardness of the relationships and emotions that stem from the weekend wedding.”

It Might Get Loud is a rousing documentary on the electric guitar told from the point of view of three highly-influential rock musicians: Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. The titling sequence, a series of slow, sensual beauty shots of a collection of guitars, has a practical look that complements the rich history of the electric guitar. Titles gradually appear near the neck and body of the instruments, until finally revealing the names of the three iconic players, branded on the guitars like logos, each with a look that parallels the guitars they used.

Tozzi explains, “For this project it was really important to develop symbolic typography-something that would really embody each icons’ style, era, and of course, music. For Jimmy Page the look is classic, Gibsonian, while The Edge has an electric, techy feel, and Jack White is about retro simplicity-he really could pick up any guitar and play.”

With this distinct typography, the Click designers help position each guitarists’ legacy as an evocative, widely-recognized brand, complete with millions of loyal fans and a dynamic rock history-all epitomized in lines, angles, colors and shadows of their personal logo. The company worked closely with Director Davis Guggenheim of Inconvenient Truth, using his creative insight and the film’s historical footage, interviews, and theme as inspiration. In addition to the title sequence, Click 3X designed the film poster and developed the look and feel of the materials that launched the film at Toronto Film Fest.

SUSPECT Crashes The Party With Sierra Mist

Posted by cgnews On December - 18 - 2008

New York-based Conceptual Design, Animation and VFX studio SUSPECT added to its impressive string of work with a spot reintroducing Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash. Led by Co-Founder/Creative Director Tim Crean and Creative Director Hoon Chong, the SUSPECT team created a dynamic animated world to bring the popular soda back as the de facto party drink for this holiday season.

“This Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash spot was an incredible challenge and opportunity for us,” noted Crean. “Renewing interest in a seasonal product is always tricky because consumers haven’t thought about it in awhile. Luckily we were able to collaborate with the expert team at TracyLocke to come up with something creative and memorable.”

The spot begins with a muted party atmosphere animated by a shifting gray silhouette of partygoers calmly mingling behind a carton of eggnog. The muted backdrop and subdued crowd create an ideal contrast to the excitable cranberries that appear in a vivid red armada to push aside and displace the status quo party drink.

A stunning graphical transformation ensues as the eggnog carton falls to the ground and the party morphs into a cranberry-colored world of pumped-up dancers gyrating beneath a shiny disco ball and rising carbonate bubbles. Bottles of Sierra Mist occupy the epicenter of the regenerated party, delivering a clear message: move over eggnog, there’s a new party drink this season.

“Any time you’re working with a brand as widely known as Sierra Mist, you have to get every detail perfect, and our team was able to create an incredible visual universe to perfectly capture the mood of this holiday drink,” noted Chong. “Most impressive, however, is how our studio put a laser focus on this project to turn it around under such a tight deadline.”

SUSPECT created this animated sequence out of nothing more than a print ad, which the agency asked them to transform into a story. The studio has been aggressively recruiting new talent in order to establish themselves as a go-to studio for innovative graphical projects, and they saw the Sierra Mist spot as a terrific challenge to test out their newly assembled team.

“We saw this spot as an opportunity to create a real showcase for what SUSPECT can do,” said Executive Producer Rob Appelblatt. “We’ve spent the last several months adding some incredible new talent to our team, and this recent effort further solidifies that we’re evolving into a truly dynamic company capable of delivering every component of a project.”

HUSH Slows It Down For Amex

Posted by cgnews On December - 17 - 2008

New York-based content creation studio HUSH has teamed up with advertising agency Momentum Worldwide on a lightning-fast live action, design and animation production. The effort is part of American Express’ new focused campaign showing on 20+ screens at the popular LA Live outdoor space adjacent to the Los Angeles Staples Center. Each of the six original pieces, bookended by the AMEX card graphic, show close-up live action shots framed as if from the perspective of a privileged fan. The pieces show basketball players, hockey players, and musicians suspended in time at the apex of their extraordinary performances.

“We wanted to really capture the feeling of front-row access that American Express customers are used to getting,” noted HUSH Co-Founder/Co-Director Erik Karasyk. “By zooming in tight and shooting our subjects at high speed with the Phantom HD camera, we created `frozen moments’ that capture the experience of being in the middle of the action.”

The close-up framing and beautifully simplified actions also served to save money and time, an important consideration on a deadline-intensive project. HUSH had only six weeks to take the entire campaign from concept to completion. To ensure its fluid execution, the team took control of every aspect of the production, from live action to editorial and VFX to finishing.

“Given the multifaceted nature of this effort, with its mix of live action and VFX, we are really proud of our team for pulling all of this together on such a short timeline,” said HUSH Co-Founder/Co-Director David Schwarz. “I think we achieved a nice balance between creative concept and production efficiencies. In order to stand out amid the frenzied 24-hour shuffle of rapidly moving imagery ripping across the 20+ media screens, I think our use of extreme slow motion will separate AMEX from the other sponsored media being showcased.”

For example, rather than recreating an entire sporting event or concert, HUSH put the spotlight on one or two characters, creating an abstract action scene that retained the intensity and power of an athlete or musician operating at full throttle. By corralling all of its creative resources, HUSH’s team was able to use its experience producing TV content to adapt a successful print campaign that Momentum Worldwide had already established.

“We worked closely with the creatives at Momentum to expand upon the great ideas they’d already used to make this a successful campaign,” stated HUSH Executive Producer Casey Steele. “We were able to create the style, flavor and feel of the content to mirror their existing campaign.”

Anonymous & T.A.G. Collaborate For GOW 2 Last Day

Posted by cgnews On December - 15 - 2008

High-end conceptual director Joe Kosinski of Anonymous Content has once again helmed a monumental trailer for the second coming of Xbox 360’s blockbuster game Gears of War 2 via San Francisco-based T.A.G. Despite the violent world in which they live, the soldiers are humanized in this :60, titled Last Day, touching on the solitude in a complicated life of war. Before the soldiers embark on their inevitable fate, we see them in their most vulnerable states. One soldier stares down at a picture of his missing wife, while another takes a moment to admire the beauty of a sole flower in the battlefield.

With the entrancing backdrop of Devotchka’s How it Ends appropriately scoring the spot, we are engulfed by the power of the message.

Kosinski commented on the process, “Like Mad World, Last Day is an example of “machinima” — it was created entirely inside the Unreal Engine 3 game engine. The movement of the characters’ bodies and faces was done utilizing the latest generation motion/performance-capture technology at Giant Studios; the same system used in James Cameron’s upcoming feature film, Avatar.”

Kosinski continues “This system includes a physical camera that provided me with a real-time view of the virtual characters in their environment, making it feel more like a traditional live-action shoot than a virtual one. In addition, the system records the precise camera movement (operated by DP Claudio Miranda), allowing for a more natural filming style.”

Star Trek coming to a screen near you!

Posted by cgnews On December - 13 - 2008

Directed by J. J. Abrams, Star Trek is the eleventh Star Trek film and features the original main characters as they set out to become USS Enterprise crew members. These Star Trek early years are portrayed by a new cast and follow James T. Kirk as he enters the Starfleet Academy. The film stars Chris Pine as James T. Kirk who took inspiration to play the part from Harrison Ford and his portrayal of the characters Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

Star Trek coming to a screen near you! startrek kirk spock

“Not to say that I modelled my version of James T. Kirk on anything in particular but I think I definitely have wanted to bring that kind of Harrison Ford humour to Kirk.” Pine has said.

Hero’s star Zachary Quinto plays a young Spock but the film will also feature Leonard Nimoy, the first actor to play the half vulcan character. Nimoy reprises his role to return as the ‘old Spock’ who comes back from the future, to give a helping hand to his friends.

Everyone’s favourite intergalactic Doctor: Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, is portrayed by Keith Urban, best known for his role as a Rohan nobleman in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Urban has been a fan of Star Trek since he was seven years old and actively pursued the role of McCoy. Explaining his interpretation of Dr. McCoy, Keith Urban has stated “it is a case of not doing some sort of facsimile or carbon copy, but really taking the very essence of what DeForest [Kelley] has done and honouring that and bringing something new to the table”

Development of the film began in 2005 when Paramount Pictures contacted Abrams (director), Roberto Orci (writer) and Alex Kurtzman (writer) for ideas to revive the franchise. The team wanted to stay faithful to the Star Trek canon, but at the same time introduce new ideas to the storyline, and modernize the production design of the original show.

Star Trek coming to a screen near you! startrek spock jnr

The film was primarily designed by Ryan Church and Star Trek veteran John Eaves. Production design was difficult as it had to be consistent with the television series but also feel more advanced than present real world technology.

“It’s how a family comes together. And then more specifically, the story of two brothers, Kirk and Spock. It’s the first time [co-writer] Alex [Kurtzman] and I got to really write about our friendship, in a way. So that was a big inspiration for us — the coming together of opposites in a partnership that takes you to places you can’t even believe.” Writer Roberto Orci on the film’s emotional context

Industrial Light & Magic is creating the visual effects for the new Star Trek film. Visual effects supervisors Roger Guyette and Sherri Hanson worked with Abrams on Mission: Impossible III. Abrams avoided using bluescreen and greenscreen as much as possible, and instead used special effects to extend the scale of sets and locations.
